Every Sunday morning we head to the South Melbourne Markets for our weekly grocery run and always seem to go elsewhere for breakfast before. Wouldn’t it be a smart idea to actual have breakfast in South Melbourne for a change?

I did a quick search and came across Cafe Sweetheart and their oversized menu that have all your favourite breakfast dishes. That was it, we were sold!

ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE

You can tell this is more of a neighbourhood gem and not your typical hipster cafe. Looking around, there were locals enjoying their morning coffee with the paper or others in deep conversation with their breakfast companions. It had a cosy intimate feel, with lots of natural lighting coming through the large floor to ceiling front windows.

A very simple layout with minimal decor filled the space. Sometimes it’s nice to go to a simple cafe and have amazing food and not have to pay for the overly decorated space! The place was packed when we arrived and had to wait for a table along with a few other couples waiting as well.

IMG_2155A small cabinet of homemade goodies was available for dine in or take away including muffins and small pastries. Coffee was consistent for all of us, which was strong, hot, and beautifully presented. They were a bit on the slow side, but well worth it!

FOOD

The menu is quite extensive with several different categories to select from. Everything from healthy options, to pancakes to build your own breakfast filled the menu.

I decided to go with their Gluten Free ‘Bircher Muesli’, which was made with fresh apple, mixed berries, roasted walnuts and honey. Presentation alone was enough to make you take a second look at the dish at the table next to you. The colours were vibrant and fresh, served on a large wooden board for that extra bit of a wow factor. This was probably one of the better muesli’s I have recently (& I love my fair share of muesli!).

MC went with the ‘Build your own Breakfast’, which was poached eggs, mushroom, bacon, smashed avocado, hash brown and curizo. Pretty much everything you could order was on the plate. A mountain of food was placed down in front of him and all piping hot. Everything was seasoned beautifully and the bacon not to greasy (a big pet peeve of ours).

We will definitely be heading back here in the coming weeks. Finding a wonderful neighbourhood gem is always a good feeling. The service is wonderful and the menu offers something for everyone at a very reasonable price.
