The Crown Metropol Perth has recently enjoyed a renovation and a change in name. Originally known as the Intercontinental, I have enjoyed many stays in the hotel both pre and post renovation.

During my most recent visit I had the pleasure of staying in one of their lofts. These rooms are the nicest available in the hotel with the exception of the penthouse suites. Boasting 150sqm of luxury, features include an oversized separate bedroom, superb bathroom with spa and rain shower and full wet bar.

The room offers a spacious area for entertaining, with a large round table for six people and oversized couches for lounging.  Three flatscreen TVs are spread throughout the lounge, bedroom and bathroom area to maximise the entertaining to all areas of the suite.

The terrace requires special mention as it is easily large enough to hold a small cocktail party for fifty or so guests. From memory, the Intercontinental used to allow a large number of guests on the terrace are up until 10pm. However I found no mention of this on the Crown Metropol website.

I have been lucky enough to stay in these rooms just after they were renovated and the level of quality is second to none. Recently however the rooms are looking a little worse for wear. In my most recent stay I requested to be changed to a different room because the room was disgusting. Stains on the carpet and walls and the blinds were all broken and ripped. For a standard rate of $1250AUD per night that is simply not good enough.

About a month before I had taken photos of a different room and raised the issue upon checkout. I was assured they would rectify the issues for my next stay. It seems that under the new management, they aren’t interested in keeping this level of quality anymore. After I was moved to another room I found out they had put somebody into the room I was just moved from. I would have expected they would repair the damage and clean the room before making someone else go through the same disappointment I went through.

Negativity aside the staff were quite helpful and happily changed my room when requested. From my experience the nicer rooms seem located on the higher floors. I’d probably recommend avoiding level one and two if possible.

The in room dining was also a treat. I ordered the steak sandwich for a quick snack before meeting some friends in the city. The food arrived quickly and was of fantastic quality. The sandwich was cut into slider style pieces with the steak cooked perfectly. Accompanied by beer battered fries and plenty of sauces. It was a pleasant change from recent in-room dining I have experienced.

The check-out process was a bit of a headache, as there was an extensive line of guests waiting to check out, all at the same time. They should really look at offering in room check out’s like some of the other hotels overseas we have stayed in have offered. This would avoid a queue at the front desk for checking out.

I would recommend the loft at the Crown Metropol but don’t put up with a room that is not top quality.
