We found ourselves at one of Berlin’s most popular restaurants, Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt. Located at the Gendarmenmarkt, the outdoor patio section offers a perfect view of both the French and German cathedral.

ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE

An authentic Bavarian beer hall awaits you as you walk through to large entrance. Dark wooden walls, unpolished floor boards and an endless amount of tables fill the over sized restaurant. I would say this is more of a classy take on most of the other beer halls in Germany. The fit out is more modern, however the vibe is exactly what you’d expect from any other beer hall.

The service was attentive and laid back with the waiters and waitress in full uniform to replicate a traditional beer wench. The full experience can be had here, without the loud live music playing to make conversation impossible.

FOOD

It’s pretty obvious what the food is like here, meat, beer, more meat and more beer! If you’re not a beer and/or meat lover, this is not somewhere you would find yourself. Although I’m not a beer drinker, I thoroughly enjoyed the food!

You will find almost every table with a stein in hand and a mountain of meat in front of them. An oversized glass of Augustiner Weissbeir was placed down in front of us while we looked through the menu on what meat we wanted.

Both Dutch & English menus are on the tables, which definitely help with the ordering process. After having a quick look through the menu, we decided to go with the Augustiner Specialty Plate, which consisted of roast pork, meatballs, meatloaf, coarse fried sausage, potato dumplings, bread dumplings, sauerkraut and potato salad.

I knew we were ordering a lot, but I wasn’t expected such a huge plate of food to arrive to the table. All of the meat was tender and juicy and the sauerkraut was amazing. The only thing we had left on our plate was the dumplings as we weren’t the biggest fans.

Overall we had an amazing experience here and the food was outstanding. If you’re looking for somewhere to get a good feel of the German lifestyle, this is definitely a great starting point!
